Via Pulchritudinis The Way of Beauty By Sharon Clossick Woman at the Well, (Inspired by the series, The Chosen) 16 x 20", Oil on Panel Original Available $1,200 What emotions do you experience when you gaze upon the Woman at the Well ? Look closely and let your mind and heart step into this Samaritan woman's life. Here is a visibly strong woman who, as we can imagine, had a tough life. We see this in her posture and attitude. Her hands are hardened and rough from fetching water during the hottest time of the day. Her eyes are downcast. She feels alone, not able to show herself to others due to her sinful life. Her body is in shadow, representing her temporal earthly life, and the light which shines upon her is the light of Christ. The Samaritan woman met Christ, or I should say, Christ met the Samaritan woman while she was in her darkest place. He knew everything about her and loved her despite all she had done. Christ allowed her to see herself as He sees her. Isn’t this how Christ also sees us? How hard this is for us to sometimes understand. We see our flaws and weaknesses and can’t imagine that Jesus still loves us despite our sinfulness. I relate to this woman and aspire to live in Christ, knowing that He knows everything about me and still loves me! This is the beauty I see in the Woman at the Well. It is the beauty of the human soul; liberated, loved and redeemed by God, if only we allow Him to enter our hearts.
Woman at the Well is my first painting in the series of “Painting the Saints”. It may seem strange to begin with the woman at the well because quite honestly, I wasn’t sure if she was even a saint! I confess that I had to google whether this woman has been declared a saint in the Catholic church. According to Catholic Answers on-line:
Woman at the Well is available for purchase ($1,200). I will have the painting professionally imaged this week and prints will be available shortly. I am excited as I prepare to paint the next saint! Stay tuned! Peace, Sharon
