Via Pulchritudinis The Way of Beauty Saint Teresa of Avila, Replica 11 x 14" Oil on Panel Saint Teresa of Avila, born on March 28, 1515, in Gotarrendura, Spain, was a prominent mystic, reformer, and writer within the Catholic Church. She entered the Carmelite convent of the Incarnation in Avila at the age of 20. Her spiritual experiences and desire for a more contemplative life led her to establish the Discalced Carmelites, a reformed branch of the Order, emphasizing a stricter observance of monastic rules.
Teresa was known for her deep mystical experiences, which she detailed in her writings, notably in "The Interior Castle" and "The Way of Perfection." Her theology focused on prayer and the soul's journey to God. Throughout her life, Teresa faced significant challenges, including illness and opposition from within the Church. Despite these obstacles, she founded several Carmelite convents across Spain. She was canonized in 1614 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1970, recognized for her significant contributions to spirituality and theology. She passed away on October 4, 1582. Her feast day is celebrated on the same date. Painting available for purchase.
